Sean's Memorial
The following are transcripts of the words that Sean's friends and his sister (on behalf of her dad and of herself) spoke at the memorial. We are forever grateful to all of you for such kindness. We also want to thank others who spoke and for whom we don't have transcripts. Further down the page, there are videos of the music that was performed during the memorial. Another thank you to all the musicians, to all of you who worked so hard behind the scenes, organizing food, sound systems, tables, chairs, flowers, photos, etc. And finally, thanks to all of you who attended, some from very distant places on very short notice, and to all of you who so generously donated to the Santa Barbara High School music program and to Ohlhoff Recovery Programs. We are well aware that for others it was simply not possible to make it due to distance and other obligations. Thanks to you, too, for your cards, emails and phone calls. We have no words to express the appreciation we have to all of you, family and friends, for the love and support you have offered our family.

Sean Peinado you're still my best friend, you're still my brother, death doesn't change anything. I love you so much and you will forever occupy the biggest and most meaningful part of my heart. You were my best friend since first grade and we discovered this world together. Everything in life that molds someone into who they are I experienced with you. My love for you is so deep I still haven't touched the bottom of it. I'm paralyzed in disbelief that you're gone. I just want to wake up already and call you to tell you I had this fucked up dream where you died and everyone was heartbroken but it's all ok now, lets go chill, get some food, play guitar, reminisce for hours. This world has lost the most unique, charismatic, kind-hearted, hilarious, all around beautiful person. Matt Cassidy-Norris, Taylor Fitts and I will forever carry the memories, stories and the legend of Sean Peinado with us until the dudes reunite again in the afterlife. The weight and energy of the word love doesn't do justice of how much you mean to me, but it will have to do. I love you Sean.

Hate to use Facebook to vent, but after pacing around for hours straight, crying, breaking shit, calling friends, I can’t help it. What do you do when the mom of your best friend in the whole fucking world since second grade calls you to tell you he died?
You were my other half Sean. I am who I am because of you. You are irreplaceable, the raddest dude to walk the fucking Earth. You were my best friend, my brother. You were like a son to my dad and a brother to my brothers. My whole family is in tears for you. Spencer, Taylor and I can't complete the dudes without you, but I know you'll always be there with us. Sean Tenaya Federico Peinado, I love you beyond words dude.

Kelly and Fede are parents to me, and i know first hand that they are the best parents that anyone could be lucky enough to have. Sean knew that. One of the last times that Sean and I hung out a few weeks ago at Cold Springs Tavern, he expressed this to us. He expressed how thankful he was to have such loving and supportive parents. And Shea and Sean had such a unique relationship. Far more than your average brotherly sisterly bond. A true friendship indescribable by words. A true rarity among siblings. He also expressed his gratitude for this on that Sunday morning. I can't thank you all enough, Kelly, Fede, and Shea, for the incredible childhood Sean and I had, and I know he felt the same way.
To my peers, sadly this is not the first tragedy that has happened amongst our network of friends and its not the second either for some of us. If there is one thing we can take from this, it's that we cannot let this happen again. Do all that you can to help a friend in need.
You'll never look back and say that you did too much. You can only look back and wish that you had done more.
Sean was more then a great friend, he was a true inspiration. He was my idol. He was a rock star. He was a pure example of freedom through self expression. He expressed himself freely without fear of judgement and I admired him greatly for it. An original amongst actors and imitators.
Uncommon traits among our generation. His smile was uplifting, because you knew he never put on a fake one. He was a charming and charismatic dude. He had a way of bringing people in who he may have just met 5 minutes prior. People were drawn to his sincere and outgoing personality. He was extremely passionate and went about things naturally, unprovoked by others. FULL OF PASSION. One of the most passionate people you'd ever meet, and dedicated whole heartily to his
friends.
No one can do what Sean was capable of accomplishing in his life. He is irreplaceable, he was so smart and so talented. He had this humble confidence and a personality that was honest and intriguing. A real person. A genuine soul.
Sean, you brought us so much laughter over the years. You and I and Matt and Spence could find hilarity in everything. I have no idea the kind of person I'd be without you. I am who I am because of you, and it's hard to imagine going on without you. My life is now a tribute to yours. Everything I do in this life will be in your honor. I have so much admiration for you. Even when times were tough. I never thought any different of you. You were always my best friend, as long as I can remember.
Sean Tenaya Federico Peinado, I love you so much.

Dad, April 17 (read at memorial by Shea)
My dear sweet Seany,
I wanted to write to you one more time. But not because I didn’t tell you most of this before. I have no regrets about that, as I know I said these things many times to you. But rather, to have a chance to share it with all your friends, and all the people who you loved so much, since most of them might have not had a chance to hear me say this to you before.
About two weeks ago, as you had told me and Mom several times before throughout your battle with this terrible disease, you found me in the kitchen preparing our dogs’ dinner, you gave me one of those strong hugs you always gave me, and said, “Dad, you’ll see. I’m going to make you proud.”
I hugged you back, just like I always did, and simply said “Thank you Seany, I love you.” But what I did not say to you was that you had already made me so proud since you were born, of course. You were so meticulous and responsible with all your schoolwork, you always had exceptional grades, you were an amazing musician, and you were always so witty. I was proud of you for all those things, of course. But what really mattered most to me was how you were so incredibly loyal to your friends. You know I would always say this to you. I don’t recall a single negative word you said about ANY friend, ever. And your compassion towards people and animals was always present. You were a real example to all of us of what a friend should be. Sensitive and loving.
Just last week, you took your lunch break at Chipotle and left a message on our answering machine simply to tell us how much you admired Mom and me as parents, and how much you loved us. How could a dad with a son like you not feel pride? Just a simple, kind gesture on a short lunch break. What a beautiful gift for a parent. You were so loving, Sean.
You wrote the following on your Facebook page once, and I’m glad you kept it there:
“The dissonance always resolves. To me, my friends and family are, infallibly, the best. Remarkable is their ability to understand my soul and to teach me the most important values. There may not be a "truth" or an "answer" to the questions that we struggle with, but this is by no means a hindrance. The truth lies in our passion and appreciation for each other. The only truth that really exists is created by our undeniable belief in each other and our acceptance of the fact that when it comes down to the bare skeleton of our existence, the only thing that matters is us. But this is not to be confused with a selfish ultimatum. What you all are to me is beyond a basis of love and understanding and thus cannot be adapted to a written language. It is a strong and very real sensation that I cannot ignore. On a level that has neither an entry nor an exit, you are the most intelligent people that I know. Your help has been, still is, and always will be invaluable to me. “
These are the things that made me the proudest about you, Seany.
And yet I know when you told me you would make me proud, you weren’t thinking about any of these things. Instead, you were thinking of how proud you would make me once you had finally beaten this horrible disease forever. But I felt proud of you all along, just for trying so hard, Seany. Nobody knows as much as Mom and I do how hard you really tried. You gave it everything you had. You were unlucky enough to have lost your grandparents to the same disease, even before you had had a chance to meet them. So, sadly, the odds were against you from the start against a disease that is cruel, relentless and unforgiving. And yet, you were a true example of dedication and persistence in doing the best you could to defeat it.
I am so proud of you, son. I am so sorry you didn’t get that chance you wanted so badly. The chance to show us you had done it. But only mom and I know how much pain you went through in this battle and now the pain is over for you, Seany. You don’t need to fight any more. You are free.
You have no idea how many times I wished to be able to carry your pain so you would not have to any more. And so now it’s finally my turn. It won’t be easy. It’s the most pain a father could possibly expect to feel. But, given the choice, I would have chosen it over your pain from the very beginning. Unlike you, I know ahead of time I will never win my battle completely. The battle against my pain. But I will fight it as hard as I can and make you proud of me. You know how I always told you I always keep my word.
So this will be my last letter to you, my dear and beloved Seany. But it won’t be the last time I talk to you. I will do that forever, as I walk in my cherished mountain hikes, and carry you in my heart always, with as much pride as you ever wished for me to have for you.
Love,
Dad

Papi

There are so many things I am going to miss about my little brother. I struggle to find words to describe the profound love and connection I felt with Sean. Those who knew us would say we were unusually close siblings. And yet, especially in these final days, I wish we were closer still. More than anything, I am going to miss the world that Sean and I created together. I’ve been thinking about all of our inside jokes, secret code words, shared memories, and the best thing I can come up with to help those gathered here understand our special world is to share with you “the purple light.” The purple light is a term Sean and I used to describe the special connection between us. We borrowed this idea from the 1995 made-for-TV movie Escape to Witch Mountain, about a twin brother and sister pair who share a supernatural connection. And when they touch hands, a beautiful purple light flows between them. The twins soon learn that they are not of this earth, but instead are from a planet where everyone has a special brother or sister that they are divinely bonded with. Once reunited with their special sibling, they can return to their home world by way of a strong purple light on top of a place called Witch Mountain.
When Sean felt we were the only two people who understood each other, or both mutually thought our parents were being particularly wacko, we would smile and touch our hands together, and say the words, “Purple light!”
Now that Sean is dead, I feel like he’s gone to Witch Mountain without me, and I am left alone here, unsure of how to get back home to our special world. Instead I am faced with the world as it is, without Sean, with all its cruelties and injustices.
Yet I am not alone, because there are so many people whose lives Sean has touched, and brought into mine. Thanks to my brother’s loyal and loving nature, I have many brothers in my extended family who have been helping me through this. Sean’s infamous Dudes Crew, Taylor, Spencer, and Matt, have all become my little brothers who are bigger than me. Also my cousin Phi, my friend Brandon, and so many others are all people who I love and are so important, especially now.
I believe that when someone loves you, they give you a part of themselves to carry. I have found that when I wish I could be with my brother again, there are parts of him present when I spend time with our friends and family.
There is so much time to go without you, brother. This world wasn’t fair to you, and I don’t expect any different in my own life. Yet my journey has already been made worthwhile because of you, because I found my purple light sibling, was able to share so many beautiful things with you, and one day I’ll escape to witch mountain to be with you again. I love you brother. PURPLE LIGHT.
LILA. (Shea)
